Catch Basin & Culvert Cleaning · Waterloo

Catch Basin and Culvert Cleaning in Waterloo

A catch basin only works while its sump has room. Once it is full of winter sand, the next storm goes straight through to the storm sewer or straight up onto the lot.

Waterloo's parking lots, campus roads, condominium drives and plaza yards all drain to catch basins with a sump below the outlet to trap sediment before it reaches the storm sewer. Winter sand, leaves, gravel and fine silt fill the sump over a season, and once it is full the basin either passes everything downstream or, if the outlet chokes, backs up onto the pavement. A hydrovac truck empties them properly: the vacuum lifts wet sediment out through the grate, water loosens anything compacted, and the material goes to the debris tank rather than being jetted down the pipe to block something further along.

What gets cleaned

  • Catch basins and double basins on private roads, surface lots and plazas, usually on a spring and fall schedule for property managers and campus grounds departments.
  • Oil-grit separators on larger lots, where sediment and floatables are removed and the unit inspected at the manufacturer's interval.
  • Trench drains at parking garage ramps, loading docks and campus service entrances.
  • Driveway culverts on the rural properties toward St. Jacobs and the township roads, where a silted culvert floods the driveway every spring.
  • Area drains, window wells and sump pits on residential and institutional buildings.

Why it cannot be flushed into the sewer

The Region of Waterloo's Sewer Use By-law 21-036 restricts storm sewers to uncontaminated water and storm water and sets a suspended solids limit on the sanitary sewer. Catch basin sediment, which carries road salt, hydrocarbons and silt, qualifies as neither, so it leaves the site in the truck and goes to a facility approved to receive it. That disposal is part of the quoted price per basin. The difference between vacuum cleaning and cheap jetting is where the sediment ends up: jetting moves it downstream; vacuum removes it from the system.

Scheduling and access

Cleaning is quoted per basin for a site, with a visit in spring after the winter sand and often another in late fall after leaf drop. The truck must park within hose reach of each basin, which on a busy campus or plaza lot means a coned window arranged with the facilities or property manager. Basins in the City right-of-way are the City of Waterloo's to maintain; this service covers private property and private roads.

Frequently asked questions

How often should catch basins be cleaned in Waterloo?

Once a year in spring after the winter sand is enough for most lots, with a fall visit on sites with heavy leaf drop or gravel. Oil-grit separators follow the manufacturer's interval. A basin that floods in ordinary rain is overdue.

Can you clear a blocked outlet?

The sump is vacuumed first, which often frees a blockage sitting at the outlet. A blockage further down the pipe is a flushing or camera job, which we can arrange or the site's drainage contractor can take on.

Do you clean the basins on my street?

No. Street basins are maintained by the City of Waterloo and a flooded one should be reported to the City. This service is for basins on private property: lots, condominium roads, campus grounds, commercial sites and private driveways.
