Hydrovac Excavation in Uptown Waterloo

Hydrovac through Uptown, from the King Street corridor and the cross streets to the condominium and office blocks around Waterloo Public Square.

Uptown was rebuilt around the light rail line, and the utilities that used to spread across King Street were relocated and compressed into the space left beside the tracks. Services now sit close together, shallow, and near overhead catenary, which makes any excavation there a hydrovac job by default: daylighting for a new storefront service, a slot trench for conduit, footings for signs, bollards and street furniture, or test holes ahead of a building services upgrade. Administratively Uptown is the most involved part of the city. The City of Waterloo requires a road occupancy permit before any part of a road, sidewalk, boulevard or trail is occupied, blocked or closed, with three business days' notice for work that closes nothing, five for a lane closure and ten for a full closure, plus a traffic control plan and an insurance certificate naming the City. King Street and other Regional roads are permitted through the Region. The truck needs a lane or loading zone within hose reach, and that is designed into the traffic plan rather than improvised on the morning. Allow one to two weeks from enquiry to dig.

Frequently asked questions

Do you charge extra for St. Jacobs or the townships?

No separate travel line. Work outside the city is quoted on the same hourly basis, and the travel is part of the day. Rural work is often cheaper per hole because the truck can park beside the line and the hose run is short.

Which permit applies outside Waterloo?

The City of Waterloo's road occupancy permit covers city roads inside Waterloo. In Woolwich Township, including St. Jacobs, the township issues its own road permits. Regional roads anywhere go through the Region of Waterloo. The Ontario One Call locate requirement is the same across Ontario.

Is there anything different about digging near Laurel Creek?

Possibly. Land along Laurel Creek and around the reservoir can fall inside a Grand River Conservation Authority regulated area, where removing material from a site may need a GRCA permit. The GRCA's Map Your Property tool shows whether an address is affected, and it is checked before the truck is booked.
